Strange Florida Auto Insurance Laws

I originally started this article with the intention of detailing weird traffic laws in Florida. I ran into a few things, first was trying to find a way to work in the keywords Florida auto insurance or Florida car insurance. That turned out to be harder than I thought. The second issue was that Florida has quite a few strange laws but most don’t apply to Florida auto insurance. For example in Florida it is illegal to tie your elephant to a parking meter. I mean that is only common sense.

I found enough strange laws that it was worth finishing this article and maybe take a subject like auto insurance in Florida and make it funny. The few car related laws I could find were:

- In Sarasota the fine for hitting a pedestrian is $78. That could be worth it for some people.

- If you are 12 or younger you have to be in at least a booster car seat, buckled up, depending on your height, weight, and age.

- It is illegal to ride a bike without a helmet, but it is not illegal to ride a motorcycle without one.

Some of the other laws I found were pretty funny, for example, ‘it is illegal to sing in a public place while attired in a swimsuit.” Or how about “Having sexual relations with a porcupine is illegal.” You would think that one is a no brainer.  You also have to think about what was going on at the time to make it necessary to pass these laws. Here are a few more, in Sarasota it is illegal to catch crabs. In Tampa Florida lap dances must be given at least six feet away from a patron.

Sometimes a law may sound funny but in the end is pretty serious. This one is from Destin and read “Torpedoes may not be set off in the city.”  I had to look this one up and what it actually said was Sec. 15-38. Behavior. No person in a park shall: (a) Fireworks and explosives. Have brought, or have in his possession, or set off or otherwise cause to explode or discharge or burn, any firecrackers, torpedo, rocket, or other fireworks or explosives of inflammable material, or discharge them or throw them into any such area from land or highway adjacent thereto. Once you read it, it does make sense and what they are referring to is fireworks and public safety.

Like I said, I did stray from the original topic of Florida auto insurance but once I started I figured we could all use a laugh and just kept going. Strange laws abound in Florida like in Pensacola “It is illegal to roll a barrel on any street, fines go up according to the contents of the barrel.” Another strange one and also from Pensacola, “Persons may not appear in public clothed in liquid latex.” That one has to make you wonder.

Of course Florida is in no way unique all 50 states have their own laws and regulations but in the strange department Florida is in a class of its own.
